Dialectical Thinking

The number one thing I do as a writer is to hold multiple truths about my work process. I set a daily and weekly goal for my word counts, but I also give myself permission to fail. If I can't write one day, I tell myself not to write. I make the choice to work on other things. On the worst days, I give myself permission not to work at all.

Some of my best creative moments have happened while I was lying down doing nothing.

Doing nothing has been just as important to my creative process as writing 10,000 words a week.

So if you're having a hard day right now, and you're struggling to push yourself to create the art you want to create, but it doesn't feel good, take this as a message from the universe to stop.

Go have a cup of tea, take a walk, yell at a rooster, smell some flowers, do whatever you need to do to give your brain the space it needs to come up with the next step. Don't force it.

The moment the eagerness is there, lean it to it and don't stop.
