Familiars

Summoning a familiar is the first spell many mundanes ever cast.

Familiars are the number one way that the Order Academy decides which mundanes to take from the Mundane realm. They are lesser fae, often referred to as Spritekin. As the Mundane Realm is a magical desert, it is far more difficult for the Spritekin to thrive there, and many seek a way to cross over into the Magic Realm. The best way for them to do that is to enter into a familiar bond with a mundane. The bond allows them to feed off of the mundane's stores of magic, and if the mundane is strong enough, or the familiar has a particular skill that the school wishes to acquire, then it is an easy way to cross over.

When their mundane dies, they are free to live out their life in the Magic realm… if they can avoid being recaptured and forced into another bond that is.
